Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science

Founded on July 29, 1876 by Dr Mahendra Lal Sircar, IACS is the oldest institute in India devoted to the pursuit of fundamental research in the frontier areas of basic sciences. Professor C V Raman worked at IACS during 1907 to 1933, and it is here that he discovered the celebrated Effect that bears his name and for which he was awarded Nobel Prize in Physics in 1930.

IACS constitutes of 8 departments and 3 units. New Centers of Excellence (Center for Theoretical Sciences, Center for Advanced Materials and Center for Renewable Energy Sources) have recently been created. It has dynamic programs for the pursuit of research leading to the doctoral degree and has a Visiting Scientists Scheme. In addition a Post-B.Sc. Integrated Ph. D. course has recently been introduced. There is an excellent library and good computing facilities. In the new millennium, IACS stands poised between the two worlds: its vibrant present evolving from its past with a rich heritage and a future pregnant with possibilities in a rapidly changing global scenario.
