Material released from TVA Widows Creek Fossil Plant in Stevenson, Ala., flows from creek into the Tennessee River.

EPA Region 4 received additional results of its independent environmental sampling activities for the TVA Widows Creek Fossil Plant gypsum pond release. A sample of floating solids was collected at the gypsum area access bridge, about 900 feet downstream from where the gypsum stilling pond overflowed into Widows Creek on Jan. 9, 2009. Agreement with Perdue Supports the Protection of Southeastern Waters

(ATLANTA – January 6, 2009) The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Regions 3 and 4 announced an agreement today with Perdue Farms, Inc., to help poultry producers growing for Perdue protect our nation’s waters. The parties signed a Memorandum of Agreement to implement the Perdue Clean Waters Environmental Initiative, an effort to provide training, assessments and other assistance to reduce the environmental impact of poultry farms. The local, state and federal agencies involved in the Unified Command responding to the TVA coal ash slide are preparing to transition from the formal unified command phase to ongoing recovery efforts with continued state oversight. The transition marks progress in the initial phases of cleanup at the site, and plans are in place to guide ongoing efforts.

Record Pollution Reduction Reached in the Southeast Due to Enforcement and Compliance Assurance Efforts

(Atlanta, GA – Dec. 4, 2008) The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Region 4 enforcement program has reduced pollution by 1.2 billion pounds in fiscal year (FY) 2008, the highest annual pollutant reduction ever in the Southeast region. EPA SETTLES WITH MEMPHIS LIGHT, GAS & WATER DIVISION FOR ALLEGED PCB VIOLATIONS
(Atlanta, Ga. – Nov. 7, 2008) The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has entered into a settlement with Memphis Light, Gas & Water Division (MLGW) in Memphis, TN that resolves alleged violations of the Toxic Substances Control Act for polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). The alleged violations included improper PCB disposal, storage, marking, recordkeeping and marketing at several of MLGW’s facilities. In a consent agreement with EPA, MLGW will pay a $1,220,576 civil penalty to resolve the alleged TSCA violations and conduct a Supplemental Environmental Project (SEP). The penalty is the highest in an EPA TSCA PCB enforcement action that includes a SEP. Full Story

Organizations Honored for Environmental Justice Achievements

(Washington, D.C. – Oct. 21, 2008) Projects that include empowering residents to clean up New Orleans East for a safe return after Hurricane Katrina and developing a tool to target high-risk homes with lead contamination in Durham, N.C., are winners of EPA's first Environmental Achievement Awards. Twelve award recipients include community-based organizations, universities, and state and local governments from nine states. Full Story

Agreement Reached with Wal-Mart in Bentonville, AR on Clean Air Act Violations
(Atlanta, Ga. – Oct. 9, 2008) The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) today announced a settlement with Wal-Mart to resolve alleged violations of the Clean Air Act (CAA), which prohibits the sale or distribution in interstate commerce of non-essential products containing substances commonly known as Ozone Depleting Substances (ODS). EPA Designates Center of Excellence for Watershed Management At Auburn University

(Atlanta, Ga. – Oct. 7, 2008) – Today, Auburn University was recognized as a Center of Excellence for Watershed Management in Alabama. This is only the fourth Center of Excellence to be designated in the Southeast. Auburn University signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Alabama Department of Environmental Management (ADEM) during a ceremony this morning in Samford Hall. New Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE) Rule Effective May 27, 2008

On May 27, 2008, EPA’s Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE) Rule becomes effective. This new regulation contains DBE provisions affecting procurement actions under all EPA financial assistance agreements/grants awarded on or after May 27, 2008. EPA’s grant recipients, sub-recipients, and loan recipients (and the prime contractors of these three entities) are all subject to EPA’s DBE Rule and DBE Program requirements.
