Vocabulary Services for caBIG™ - LexBIG

The LexBIG vocabulary services represents a compressive set of software and services to load, publish, and access vocabulary. Cancer Centers can use the LexBIG package to install NCI Thesaurus and NCI Metathesaurus content queryable via a rich application programming interface (API). LexBIG services can be used in numerous applications wherever vocabulary content is needed. LexBIG vocabulary services provides caBIG™ with:

  • A robust and scalable open source implementation of EVS-compliant vocabulary services. The LexBIG API specification will be based on but not limited to fulfillment of the caCORE EVS API.
  • A flexible implementation for vocabulary storage and persistence, allowing for alternative mechanisms without impacting client applications or end users.
  • Standard tooling for load and distribution of vocabulary content. This includes but is not limited to support of standardized representations such as UMLS Rich Release Format (RRF), the OWL web ontology language, and Open Biomedical Ontologies (OBO) .

LexBIG is intended to address the needs of the following groups:

  • Vocabulary service providers: Orgaizations currently supporting externalized API-level interfaces to vocabulary content for the caBIG™ community.
  • Vocabulary integrators : Organizations within the caBIG™ community that desire to integrate new vocabulary content to be served to the caBIG™ community.
  • Vocabulary users: The caBIG™ community interested in utilizing vocabulary services within the context of other caBIG projects .

LexBIG 1.0.1 has been delivered and deployed at NCI’s EVS. Deployment of LexBIG 1.0.1 to a cancer center is currently being implemented.
