The Museum Collection
The museum collection at Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park consists of over 380,000 objects under the general classifications of Archeology, Ethnology, History, Archives, Biology, Paleontology, and Geology. The purpose of the museum collection is to preserve specimens for study, reference, education and resources managment. Objects may also document the people and events from the park's history.

Research Library
A research library is available for use by the public. The library material focuses on subjects that support park staff efforts to preserve and interpret the natural and cultural resources at Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park. The collection consists of bound books, rare books, periodicals, reference and scienctific research files, and audiovisual material. Borrowing privileges are limited and must be approved by the library manager. To make an appointment, please call the library manager at (808) 985-6138.

Did You Know?
Only two butterflies found in Hawai`i are native. The Kamehameha Butterfly (Vanessa Tameamea) is Hawai`i's state insect, brightly colored, and larger than the Blackburn's blue (Udara blackburni).
