Transportation Secretary Mineta Announces $15 Million in Grants for California Airports

U.S. Secretary of Transportation Norman Y. Mineta today announced $15 million in grants for California airports.

“Protecting transportation infrastructure and improving our ability to quickly respond to future attacks is of central importance to all Americans,” Secretary Mineta said.  “As we recognize National Tourism week, I can assure you that President Bush and I remain dedicated to building a reliable, efficient and secure transportation system that will encourage Americans to travel and enjoy our great nation.  Today’s federal grants will continue to provide a robust safety and security effort for the state of California.”

Two airports received grants to improve safety and meet current airport design standards.  Norman Y. Mineta San Jose International Airport received $11.7 million to rehabilitate runway 30L/12R, and Sacramento International Airport received $1.6 million to rehabilitate an apron.

In addition, $1.7 million was granted to San Francisco International Airport to soundproof nearby schools to mitigate the effect of airport noise.

The funds come from the Airport Improvement Program of the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Aviation Administration.
