Wu Appointed to Lead DOT Civil Rights Office

U.S. Secretary of Transportation Norman Y. Mineta today announced the appointment of Jeremy S. Wu as director of the Office of Civil Rights for the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT).

“The department faces a number of critical management challenges in civil rights and diversity.  Jeremy’s experience in these areas over more than two decades in government makes him well-prepared to head our department’s civil rights program,” Secretary Mineta said.  “He will make a welcome addition to our team.”

Wu comes to DOT from the U.S. Department of Energy, where he served as director of the Office of National Ombudsman since January 2000.   In that position he performed a leading role in resolving workplace disputes and promoting diversity in the department.

He previously had served the U.S. Department of Agriculture for 19 years, most recently as deputy director of systems and administration for its Office of Civil Rights beginning September 1998.   During that time he was responsible for developing policies on tracking complaints, Internet applications, Year 2000 compliance and automation.  From March 1997 to September 1998 he was deputy director for programs in the department’s Office of Civil Rights.  He worked for the statistics branch of the Agricultural Marketing Service from January 1981 to March 1997, and headed the office beginning in August 1983.

Wu earned his bachelor’s degree in 1974 and a master’s degree in 1976, both at The George Washington University (GWU) in the field of statistics.  He earned his doctorate in mathematical statistics from GWU in 1983.  He currently lectures on statistics part-time at GWU.

The role of the DOT Office of Civil Rights is to eliminate and prevent unlawful discrimination against DOT employees, applicants for employment and recipients of financial assistance from the department.
