Ashton/Island Park Ranger District
Recreation
opportunities abound on the 700,000 acre Ashton/Island Park Ranger District.
Fishing, camping, floating, sightseeing, hiking, hunting, cross country
skiing and snowmobiling are the most popular activities. Big Springs,
Upper and Lower Mesa Falls are the most visited scenic attractions. There
are 615 miles of roads open to motorized travel and 172 miles of hiking
trails on the district.

There are a
variety of trails available, of which several are suited for horseback
riding, mountain biking, hiking, motorized
and more.
Campgrounds
on the District
If you’re
looking for a great recreational experience, stay at one of the campgrounds
located on the district, many of which are located near a wonderful
attraction, trail head or boat ramp.
Rental
Cabins
Do
you want to go camping, but would rather stay in a cabin? Rent one
of our three many rustic cabins located throughout the Forest. They
are open year-round and can be accessed by snowmobiles or by cross-country
skiing during the winter months.
Water
Sports
Boat ramps are
available throughout the district to the public to launch into reservoirs
and rivers. Several boat ramps have campgrounds nearby.
Cross Country Ski Trails
Do you have Cabin Fever? There are over 60 miles of Cross Country
Ski Trails available on the Ashton/Island Park Ranger District.

Mesa
Falls Scenic Byways
The
southern portal of the Mesa Falls Scenic Byway starts in the town
of Ashton, Idaho on U.S. Highway 20. A paved, two lane road winds
its way through scenic farm lands of potatoes, barley and alfalfa
before entering the Three Rivers Canyon area and climbing to a mixed
forest of lodge pole pine, Douglas fir and aspen. The byway rejoins
Highway 20 approximately 28 miles to the north near Harriman State
Park.

Viewing
Elk, deer, bear,
antelope, cougars and moose roam throughout the district. Sandhill
cranes, trumpeter swans, a variety of waterfowl, song birds and
eagles may also be seen.
