Federal Funding

Several Federal agencies (Department of Transportation, Department of Justice, and the Department of Health and Human Services) offer state funding for impaired driving prevention and intervention programs. Find out more below.

  • Crime Victim Compensation
    Funds under this program shall be used by the states for awards of compensation benefits to victims and survivors of victims of criminal violence, including drunk driving.
  • Minimum Penalties for Repeat Offenders for DWI or DUI
    This program encourages states to enact Repeat Intoxicated Driver law that provide minimum penalties for an individuals convicted of a second or subsequent offense for driving while intoxicated (DWI) or driving under the influence (DUI) after a previous conviction for that offense.
  • Open Container Requirements
    This program encourages states to enact open container laws that prohibit the possession of any open alcoholic beverage container, or the consumption of any alcoholic beverage, in the passenger area of any motor vehicle (including possession or consumption by the driver of the vehicle) located on a public highway, or the right-of-way of a public highway, in the state.
