Composting is the controlled microbial decomposition of organic matter (such as food scraps and yard trimmings) in the presence of oxygen into a humus- or soil-like material. Compost can be used for bioremediation and pollution prevention, disease control for plants and animals, erosion control and landscaping, composting of contaminated soils, reforestation, wetlands restoration, and habitat revitalization
