The Wildlife Society informs the media and public about critical issues in wildlife science, management, and conservation through an active public affairs program.
As the leading scientific and educational organization representing and serving wildlife professionals, TWS has a responsibility to carefully analyze local, regional, national and international policies, and human activities that have the potential to impact wildlife and their habitats, in North America and beyond.
In developing its position on these issues, TWS can call upon an extensive network of over 7,500 active wildlife professionals, academicians and students. These are the experts who study, manage, protect, and conserve wildlife day-to-day.
The Wildlife Society’s governing Council periodically charges a special committee to develop a technical paper on a wildlife management or conservation issue of current concern. These papers are published in the Society’s Technical Review Series. In addition to these reports, Government Affairs staff works closely with TWS members and leadership to develop position statements on a broad range of wildlife policy topics. These statements are then reviewed thoroughly by the membership and Council before being approved as the official TWS position.
Press releases are developed and widely distributed each time TWS launches a new program, develops a policy statement or publishes an expert technical review of cutting-edge issues in wildlife science, management, and conservation.
News releases have covered topics as diverse as prairie dog management and its impact on endangered black-footed ferrets, the delisting of grizzly bears in Yellowstone National Park, baiting and feeding of game wildlife species, the U.S. Navy’s plans to build an outlying landing field in the heart of the Atlantic Flyway—a critical habitat for migratory birds, wildlife conservation provisions of the 2007 Farm Bill, control of feral cat populations and their impact on wildlife.
TWS is a member of the Environmental News Network, the world’s leading online news network serving environmental professionals. TWS press releases are distributed electronically through ENN to an audience that includes over 25,000 newsletter subscribers and one million page views each month.
