SIVO personnel will convene the session, "IN15: Emerging Multi-core Computing Technology
in Earth and Space Sciences" at the 2008 Fall AGU meeting on December 15–19, 2008, in San Francisco, CA. This session will focus on the issues concerning the impacts of multi- and many-core processors. Please join us to find ways of taking advantage of multi-core processors in Earth and Space science applications.

The SIVO Seminar Series presents "Interactive Parallel Computing and Distributed Arrays in Python" by Peter Stoltz (Tech-X) on Wednesday, July 9, 2008, at 10:00 a.m. The seminar will be an informal "brown-bag" format and attendees are encouraged to participate in the form of questions, discussions, and recommendations.

Abstract: The IPython project has been developing an open-source architecture for parallel computing in Python. This architecture 1) has high-level interfaces that support rapid development, 2) enables all aspects of
parallel computing to be performed interactively, and 3) supports many different models of parallelism. Because IPython is fully open source and built upon a general purpose programming language (Python) it provides a simple way for users to integrate their own existing parallel codes into IPython and use them interactively. After providing an overview of IPython, I will discuss recent NASA-funded work implementing distributed
arrays and using legacy Fortran codes in parallel from within this architecture.

From June 1-13, 2008 13 premier international modeling groups contributed dynamical cores and modeling mentors for the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) Advanced Study Program Summer Colloquium on Numerical Techniques for Global Atmospheric Models. SIVO and Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) staff supported three NASA models, the newly developed Finite-Volume dynamical core on the cubed-sphere grid, the latitude-longitude based Finite-Volume dynamical core from the NASA Global Modeling and Assimilation Office (GMAO) Goddard Earth Observing System Model, Version 5 (GEOS-5) atmospheric model, and the B-grid quadratic upstream scheme dynamical core from the NASA GISS ModelE. The colloquium provided a unique opportunity for selected graduate students from the atmospheric sciences and applied mathematics to get hands-on experience with the latest numerical methods for dynamical core components.

The SIVO Fortran 2003 Seminar Series concludes with"Object Oriented Programming – Polymorphism in F2003" on Tuesday, May 20, 2008 at 12:00 PM. In this final session we will cover new aspects of the standard which enable polymorphism, a powerful abstraction from object oriented programming. Polymorphism allows the behavior of an "object" (variable) to vary at runtime without altering other portions of code which used that variable. Both "class" polymorphism and a limited form of "template" polymorphism will be addressed. We will provide detailed examples.

The seminar will be an informal "brown-bag" format and attendees are encouraged to participate in the form of questions, discussions and recommendations.

SIVO and the NASA Center for Computational Sciences (NCCS) are pleased to announce an open house to showcase some of the services available to NASA's research community. The open house will be held next Thursday, the 14th of February from 1:30-3:00pm in the SIVO Scientific Visualization Studio.

The SIVO team will discuss service offerings in the areas of visualization and analysis as well as their work done in support of scientific applications and the modeling community. The NCCS will highlight some of its compute, archive and service capabilities; all of which are available to researchers who are supported by NASA's Science Mission Directorate.

The open house will also include a demonstration of the Scientific Visualization Studio as well as tours of the NCCS compute and storage facility. Team members from both organizations will be on hand to assist with any questions concerning both current and future use of these services. SIVO is pleased to begin a new biweekly series of seminars on the new Fortran 2003 (F2003) standard beginning in January 2008. The F2003 standard is a major update to the Fortran standard it includes a wide variety of new capabilities of relevance to our community. Many of these features are now available in virtually all recent releases of Fortran compilers with others only available from the more progressive vendors. The content of this series will emphasize relevance of new features to scientific modeling and best practices for the use of these new features to ensure clean, portable software. With the exception of the first session which will be a general introduction to the new Fortran standard, each subsequent session will cover a separate subset of the new features in an informal brown-bag format. The attendees are encouraged to participate in the form of questions, discussions and recommendations. SIVO will also maintain a web-based discussion area for these topics. The first session will be on Tuesday, January 29 at 2:00 PM.
