Foley to lead new Minnesota institute

July 23rd, 2008

Jonathan Foley, founder and director of the Nelson Institute’s Center for Sustainability and the Global Environment (SAGE), is leaving UW-Madison to become director of the new Institute on the Environment (IonE) at the University of Minnesota. (See news release.)

“This was an incredibly hard decision, and one that I did not make lightly,” says Foley. “I have been at Wisconsin for roughly two decades and have tremendously enjoyed the opportunity of working with the wonderful students and colleagues here. It will be very hard to leave.

“But the chance to build a world-class, interdisciplinary environmental research institute at Minnesota — with a blank slate, incredible university and state support — is simply a once in a lifetime opportunity.”

Foley will start at Minnesota on August 25. An interim director for SAGE is expected to be named soon.
