The New Mexico Fish & Wildlife Conservation Office (NMFWCO) addresses fishery management issues as diverse as New Mexico itself, from desert fishes in arid environs to trout in highcountry streams.

The NMFWCO leads long-term studies of fishes in the Rio Grande, and the Pecos and San Juan rivers, in collaboration with the Bureau of Reclamation and New Mexico Department of Game and Fish.

The NMFWCO has been a driving force in recovering the nation's only endangered trout, the Gila trout. Indian tribes benefit from the NMFWCO science expertise; biologists provide assistance in managing the Rio Grande cutthroat trout on tribal lands.
