Nuclear Engineering Science Laboratory Synthesis (NESLS)
The Nuclear Engineering Science Laboratory Synthesis (NESLS) program is a cooperative research initiative geared toward students working in physics and nuclear engineering applications.Through one- to three-year summer internships, NESLS offers engineering students and faculty on-the-job educational and research opportunities at a multidisciplinary national laboratory.

While You Are Here:
- Enrich your laboratory experience by attending the lecture series to learn of the work of outstanding speakers
- Network with laboratory research staff and with fellow students through work and social events
- Take technical tours of facilities at ORNL
- Prepare and present your project for a 10-minute presentation to laboratory staff and fellow students
Eligibility: The ORNL NESLS program is open to faculty and full- or part-time engineering students with a minimum grade point average of 3.0 (on a scale of 4) enrolled at a U.S. university at the time of appointment. All awards and active participation in the program are contingent upon security access approval to Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
Qualifications: Student applicants will be chosen on the basis of academic performance, class standing, career goals, recommendations, and compatibility of educational interests and abilities with the needs of ORNL.
Application Procedure: Applications for the summer program must be submitted prior to the March 1 program deadline. A limited number of slots are available during fall and winter sessions. Applicants may apply for NESLS via the online application form.
Selection: The award will be based on mentor's selection and project funding availability. Applicants will be notified of acceptance on or around March 31 for the summer session.
Duration: The award is an appointment of approximately 10 weeks. Renewals are limited.
Benefits: Travel to and from (max $500); Housing allowance of $105/week if located more than 60 miles from laboratory.

Health Insurance: Each participant is required to have coverage in a health insurance plan. It is the responsibility of each participant to secure insurance coverage before arriving at the appointed site.
Deadline for summer applications is March 1. Students chosen to participate in the NESLS program will be notified of acceptance on or around March 31.
