MFReid/Artist	Jun 23 2008 3:52 PM Thank you. As an artist, my first memorable museum experience was at the age of seven years while living in Paris. My mother, a painter at the time, took me to the Museum d'Orangerie to see Monet's Waterlilies. I sat on the bench in the room, for a good long hour and observed my mother and visitors looking at his paintings which seemed to surround me at the time. I watched visitors as they viewed upclose his paint strokes, then stepped back and look again. That was a huge moment for me- to see what happened to art once it left the artist's hands and studio- up until then, art was something I saw as a retreat for the artist- a place to go- but here in this room with Monet's Waterlilies, I saw the circle complete itself- this was an 'a-ha' moment for me. I thought to myself then, "I want to do this, I want my art to have this effect on people." Musuem's are more than walls and halls for objects d'art. Musuem's, if done right, in giving room for the art to breathe, can be a place for one to go and reflect and see what the artist sees and feels long after the art has left the artist's studio. Museums can bring art to full circle and keep the art spirit alive in even the youngest visitors. Best wishes, Michelle Firment Reid
