Scenic Byways
Scenic byways on the Willamette National Forest:
Scenic byways are special roads that have high scenic and recreational
value. More people visit National Forests to sightsee than any other
recreation activity. In fact, the Oregon Tourism Commission states
that driving for pleasure is one of the most popular outdoor activities
for Oregon travelers.
National Scenic Byways are a distinctive collection of American
roads designated by the U.S. Department of Transportation for their
outstanding scenic, historic, recreational, cultural, archeological
and natural qualities. The Willamette National Forest hosts the
West Cascades National Scenic Byway and the McKenzie Pass - Santiam
Pass National Scenic Byway. West Cascades is a 220-mile drive extending
from Estacada to Westfir, Oregon. McKenzie - Santiam Pass is a loop
that includes the highest concentration of snow-capped volcanoes
in the lower 48 states.
