UMaine Career Fair Jan. 28
In spite of a flagging economy, more than 100 employers in and around Maine will be looking to the University of Maine's annual Career Fair on Jan. 28 for promising new employees and interns in dozens of career fields ranging from healthcare and social services to engineering, scientific research and law enforcement. The Career Fair, organized annually by the UMaine Career Center, is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the UMaine Student Recreation and Fitness Center on the Orono campus. As many as 110 employers have registered for booth space, according to Patricia Counihan, center director. A news release with more is here.

Peterson to Moderate Racetrack Surface Discussion
Mick Peterson, Libra Foundation professor in the UMaine Dept. of Mechanical Engineering and an expert on thoroughbred race track surfaces, will moderate a panel discussion on that subject on Feb. 1 at the National Horsemen's Benevolent and Protective Association conference. The panel's discussion will focus on "Synthetic versus Dirt -- A Track Superintendent's Viewpoint."

Channel 7 Interviews Barkan
 Prof. Steve Barkan, criminology expert in UMaine's Dept. of Sociology, was interviewed by Channel 7 (WVII) on Wednesday for a story looking at Gov. Baldacci's proposal to send certain prison inmates to prison facilities in other states. He also explained the relationship between crime rates and the economy.

Channel 5 to Preview Inauguration
 Channel 5 (WABI) will interview UMaine political science professor Amy Fried and students Ben Goodman and Nate Wildes on Friday for a story previewing next week's presidential inauguration. Goodman and Wildes are headed to Washington to attend the inauguration.
