LIST OF 1996 MODEL YEAR CANADIAN VEHICLES CONSIDERED
BY EPA TO CONFORM WITH U.S. EMISSIONS REQUIREMENTS

Note: All 1988 through 1995 Canadian automobiles (gasoline or diesel fueled), light-duty trucks (gasoline or diesel fueled) and heavy-duty gasoline fueled engines are considered by EPA to conform with U.S. emission requirements.

EPA will update this list as necessary to add new models as they are being introduced into commerce and to reflect changes as reported by the manufacturers or importers.

NOTE TO IMPORTERS OF VEHICLES OR ENGINES FOR PURPOSES OF RESALE

1. Clean Air Act Section 216 defines an importer of vehicles or engines for resale as a "manufacturer." An importer for resale must therefore comply with the labeling requirements of 40 CFR §86.0xx-35, where xx is the model year of the vehicle imported, e.g. §86.095-35. The importer must affix the following label in a readily visible position in the vehicle engine compartment (if light-duty) or on the engine if heavy duty:

This vehicle or engine was originally produced by (manufacturer) in (month and year of original production) for sale in Canada. It has been imported by (company name, address and telephone number) and conforms to U.S. emission regulations applicable to the (year) model year

2. An importer for resale must also comply with the maintenance instruction requirement of 40 CFR §86.0xx-38 (see above), e.g. §86.085-38, and the record keeping requirements of 40 CFR §86.0xx-7 (see above), e.g. §86.078-7 retaining records of the importation for six years, as applicable.

All car/light-duty truck (gasoline engine) models are subject to the following:
The importer of a 1996 General Motors Corporation vehicle from Canada as "U.S.-identical" affirms that the vehicle's on-board diagnostic (OBD) system has been recalibrated to GM's U.S. Federal specifications prior to importation. The importer must obtain a signed mechanic's certification demonstrating that the vehicle PROM was calibrated to GM's U.S. Federal specifications using GM authorized equipment and software prior to importation. The importer agrees to display or provide the certification to EPA, U.S. Customs, any State motor vehicle program officials, or to subsequent vehicle purchasers upon request. Importers for resale must also retain the certification for six years (40 CFR §86.078-7), as well as observing the stipulations shown on the cover page of this document.
