NASA will soon launch the Kepler mission to discover Earth-sized planets around stars by detecting winks in brightness as planets transit. Activities: modeling and interpretation of graphs of light vs. time. Kepler: A Search for Habitable Planets
Space Science Teacher Workshop
Location: SETI Institute, Mountain View, CA
An exciting day of science and hands-on activities for middle and high school science teachers. Dr. David Koch, Mission Deputy PI will discuss the science behind NASA’s Kepler Mission, which launches in March 2009. Standards based, classroom ready activities include: Human Orrery, Detecting Extrasolar Planets, Transit Tracks, and building a computer-interfaced transit model. A letter verifying 8 hours of professional development can be provided. Each workshop participant will receive a complete transit model, which includes a LEGO orrery, Vernier light sensor, interface and graphing software, and lamp and light bulb, a $150 value. Pre-registration required; $10 fee. A letter verifying 8 hours of professional development can be provided. Dr. Jeff VanCleve will discuss the science behind NASA’s Kepler Mission, which launches in March 2009. Standards-based, classroom ready activities include: Human Orrery, Detecting Extrasolar Planets, Transit Tracks, and building a computer-interfaced transit model. Dr. Bill Possel will lead a tour of the NASA Mission Operations Facility at the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics (LASP). Each workshop participant will receive a complete transit model, which includes a LEGO orrery, Vernier light sensor, interface and graphing software, and lamp and light bulb, a $150 value. Lunch provided. A letter verifying 8 hours of professional development can be provided. Pre-registration required. Kepler Mission session in the NASA eEducation Electronic Professional Development Network Series.
NASA's Digital Learning Network presents a series of videoconferences to assist educators in staying current on NASA education resources and related products. During each event, product producers, authors and experts will demonstrate their materials designed to optimize awareness and understanding of science concepts. Instructional objectives, accessing the materials and primary contacts for the materials will also be discussed. During the videoconferences, participants will be able to submit questions to the presenter that will be addressed during the presentation. The Kepler mission will seek evidence for Earth-size planets in orbit around sun-like stars. For the first time NASA will be able to search the galaxy for Earth-size or smaller planets.
