Educator Janet Oakley will offer a glimpse of pioneer domestic life as it was lived in the mid-19th century in a demonstration scheduled 12:30 to 3:30 p.m., Saturday, July 21, on the English Camp parade ground.
The event is free. Disabled persons should contact the park for special access information at 378-2902.
Her costumed presentation, which coincides with the park’s regular costumed reenactment program, is highlighted by open-fire cooking, Dutch oven baking (sourdough bread biscuits and cake), butter churning and other domestic tasks.
As the education coordinator at the Skagit Valley Historical Museum in LaConner, Oakley dedicates her time to teaching young people. She assisted in designing the Pig War Traveling Trunk -- a 4th and 5th grade curriculum for the San Juan Island National Historical Park. She was also instrumental in establishing the “Conservation Site”, a 19th-century pioneer cabin replete with all the tools essential to everyday life, for the Bellingham School District.
