Are you a young man or woman who is at least, or will be, 15 years old by June 14, 2009 and is 18 years of age and will not turn 19 until after August 6th, 2009? Are you interested in summer employment with the Forest Service?

The Middle Fork and McKenzie River Ranger Districts of the Willamette National Forest are seeking interested youth to apply for summer employment under the Youth Conservation Corps (YCC) program.

Applications will be accepted from January 12th through February 20th, 2009.

YCC employees complete needed conservation work on public lands and have the opportunity to learn about and develop an appreciation of the natural environment. YCC is a 5 to 8 week working session for area youth to learn about natural resource management. The emphasis is on hands-on learning; tasks may include campground maintenance and renovation, trail building, noxious weed removal, planting, fire lookout restoration, and various other projects.

The number of people hired is dependant on available funding and differs by location. In both locations selections for crew members are done by random drawing while still ensuring roughly equal numbers of male and female participants. The Middle Fork Ranger District in Westfir, OR will hire four to five crews of 4 youth each and the McKenzie River Ranger District near McKenzie Bridge, OR will hire two crews of four youth. Each crew will also be staffed with an adult crew leader and one returning youth. Wages for first year crew members are the minimum wage of $8.40/hour; wages for the second year youth are the minimum wage plus $0.50 more an hour.

Crew members will be expected to report to the ranger station each morning; transport out to the field sites from the ranger station will be provided by the Forest Service. Employment will begin June 15th and close August 6th; if funding is available, some additional weeks of work may be provided. Crew members must come prepared with proper work boots, work clothes and lunches; crews are expected to perform rigorous outdoor work under potentially adverse weather conditions in rough terrain.

Interested youth may obtain an application at their High School counselor’s office, the Ranger District Offices or on the web at: http://www.fs.fed.us/r6/willamette/admin/employment/ycc/. However, applications must be signed, and therefore submitted in hardcopy.

For further information contact D’lynn Williams on the Middle Fork Ranger District in Westfir at 541.782.5341 or Penny Harris on the McKenzie River Ranger District near McKenzie Bridge at 541.822.726
