Disney motion pictures' musical standards resounded in Esber Recital Hall on Friday, Jan. 16, as SNATS, the Penn State chapter of the Student National Association of Teachers of Singing, took the stage. The event, entitlted "Dreams, Dances and Disney, Oh My!" was an informal cabaret performance comprising musical selections from prominent Disney movies. San Francisco's Chanticleer, called "the world's reigning male chorus" by The New Yorker, was named 2008 ensemble of the year by Musical America. In concert at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 7, in Penn State's Eisenhower Auditorium, Chanticleer commemorates the 250th anniversary of "My Days Have Been So Wondrous Free," the first American song, with a diverse program of music composed in North America. "Jesus Christ Superstar" comes to Penn State for one performance at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 3, in Eisenhower Auditorium. The revival tour stars Ted Neeley, whose frequent portrayals of the musical's title character have won him worldwide acclaim. The musical, often called a rock opera, features the songs "I Don't Know How to Love Him," "Hosanna," "Everything's Alright," "What's the Buzz," "Superstar," "Heaven on Their Mind" and "Gethsemane." Tickets for the Center for the Performing Arts presentation are $55 and $49 for an adult, $40 and $34 for a University Park student and $50 and $44 for a person 18 and younger. (more)

Several art exhibits commemorating the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. currently are on display at Penn State's University Park campus. Artwork on display includes the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Art Competition, in which community members have submitted varied artwork for display in the HUB-Robeson Center with a winner to be announced at the Martin Luther King Evening Celebration, which takes place from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday (Jan. 21) in Eisenhower Auditorium. The Evening Celebration features peace activist Arun Gandhi as keynote speaker. (more)

Penn State will host of the 2009 Big Ten Wrestling Championships in March and tickets for the two day event go on sale Monday (Jan. 19). The Big Ten Championships take place on Saturday and Sunday, March 7-8. Action begins on Saturday with two sessions, one at 11 a.m. and a second at 6 p.m. Sunday's session, which features the placing bouts and championships, begins at noon. Full tournament (all session) packages are $30 for adults and $15 for students/youth. Fans can purchase tickets from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. each weekday beginning Monday, Jan. 19, either by phone at (814) 865-5555 or at the Bryce Jordan Center ticket office. (more)

Light-driven plasmonic nanoswitch may pave way for new computers, tech

A team led by Tony Jun Huang, the James Henderson assistant professor of engineering science and mechanics at Penn State, has developed a working plasmonic switch, the first step in building optical computers with frequencies 100,000 times greater than the ones of current microprocessors. Research by Huang's Biofunctionalized NanoElectroMechanicalSystems (BioNEMS) group will lead to advances that can make possible online video streaming with the quality of high-end home theater systems and computer programs running a thousand times faster.
