The Endocrine Society presents the Continuing Medical Education Services (CMES) Regional Forum entitled:

Endocrine Care 2008: Integrating the Spectrum of Care From
Cardiometabolic Risk to Inpatient Hyperglycemia.

Steering Committee

Anthony L. McCall, MD, PhD, University of Virginia Health Systems - Chair
Caroline Apovian, MD, Boston University Medical Center
Susan Braithwaithe, MD, University of North Carolina Diabetes Care Center
John Leahy, MD, University of Vermont College of Medicine
Michelle Magee, MD, MedStar Diabetes and Research Institute
Kevin Niswender, MD, PhD, Vanderbilt University School of Medicine

Background

The program is designed for all members of the endocrine team to understand
the serious consequences of cardiometabolic risk factors, new physiologic pathways
that can target weight loss and cardiovascular risk, and the urgency of recognizing
hyperglycemia in hospitalized patients in the presence or absence of diabetes.

Participants can receive a maximum of 3.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits  for this educational activity.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this educational activity, participants will be able to:
  • Examine the role central adiposity plays as a contributor to cardiometabolic risk
to better identify individuals at risk
  • Discuss lifestyle modifications and new pharmacologic options when diet and
exercise alone fail to produce significant weight loss and multiple risk factor
    reductions
  • Define and apply current standard of care guidelines for blood pressure, lipid,
    and glucose control
  • Examine the rationale for targeted glycemic control in the hospital setting to
    minimize critical glucose fluctuations
  • Outline strategies for implementing hospital insulin protocols and postdischarge
plans to reach and maintain euglycemia
