Community ideas invited on the future of Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse Outstanding Natural Area

The pubic is invited to bring their ideas on the future of the recently designated Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse Outstanding Natural area to a series of public workshops hosted by the Jupiter Inlet Working Group, including: Bureau of Land Management (BLM), U.S. Coast Guard, Palm Beach County, Village of Tequesta, Town of Jupiter, Loxahatchee River Historical Society and the Jupiter High School, Environmental Research and Field Studies Academy. The purpose of these meetings are to solicit information from the public on issues, opportunities, and concerns in preparation for the development of the management plan for the 126-acres surrounding the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse.

“BLM and our managing partners take our role as stewards very seriously” said Bruce Dawson, the BLM Field Manager. “These meetings are the beginning of the public dialog to explore opportunities for this most recent addition to the National Landscape Conservation System.  Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse Outstanding Natural Area is the first unit designated east of the Mississippi River, but our goal remains the same…to conserve, protect and restore nationally significant landscapes recognized for their outstanding cultural, ecological and scientific values.”

Three public scoping meetings scheduled over the next two months:

Village of Tequesta, Town Hall, Council Chambers – Sept. 10, 4:00 - 7:00 p.m.

Town of Jupiter, Community Center – September 24, 4:00 - 7:00 p.m.

Jupiter Inlet Colony, Beach Club – Oct. 15, 4:00 – 7:00 p.m.

The meetings will include a brief overview of the upcoming planning process at 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.  During the remaining time, displays on the history and current conditions of the site, as well as representatives from BLM and the management partners will be available to answer your questions and discuss any issues or ideas you may have.  Written comment cards will also be available.  Click here to identify issues or submit comments regarding the scoping phase through the end of October.  There will be additional opportunities to comment on proposed actions and alternatives later in the planning process.
