New NHI
Courses Available in 2002
Road
Safety Audits and Road Safety Audit Reviews (Course #380069)
— Participants in this course will learn how to improve transportation
safety by learning how to apply road safety audits (RSA) and road
safety audit reviews (RSAR) to future or existing roadways, which
improve safety and keep the public informed about efforts to reduce
the number of crashes.
Rural
ITS Toolbox (Course #137007) — This course describes and
documents many intelligent transportation systems (ITS) practices
and techniques that have been successfully applied to rural transportation
problems. The Rural ITS Toolbox training will be helpful to identify
ITS solutions that can have a low-cost/high-return impact on rural
transportation.

NHI
Training Partnerships
- To
maximize resources and minimize duplication, NHI and the National
Transit Institute (NTI) collaborated on course development and delivery
in the areas of planning and environment. A highlight of 2001 was
the completion of the first NHI/NTI joint course: Introduction to
Metropolitan Transportation Planning. This effort was coordinated
by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), the Federal Transit
Administration (FTA), and the Association of Metropolitan Planning
Organizations (AMPO), as well as stakeholders and customers.
- NHI
is working with FHWA headquarters, state departments of transportation
(DOTs), and industry partners in the recently formed Transportation
Curriculum Coordination Council (TCCC), which prioritizes and coordinates
training for the transportation industry. NHI is developing the
TCCC Web site, as well as courses in construction workmanship, geotechnical
inspector training, and quality assurance.
- NHI
and the FHWA Office of Real Estate Services, in cooperation with
the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials
(AASHTO) and the International Right-of-Way Association (IRWA),
have completed an analysis that identifies training needs and obstacles
to training — with new course development and improved marketing
of NHI courses to the real estate community on the way.
