Founded in 1848, AAAS serves some 272 affiliated societies and academies of science and publishes the peer-reviewed general science journal Science. The non-profit AAAS is open to all and fulfills its mission to "advance science and serve society" through initiatives that include science policy, international programs, science education, and public understanding of science.
For over 150 years, the life of the AAAS has been interwoven with the growth of American science. This website provides a brief AAAS History and information on AAAS & Division Officers, Meetings, Official Documents, and Publications. The Resources section provides information on additional repositories and scholarly works related to the history of AAAS.
The AAAS Archives are open to all researchers interested in the history of the association and its role in the development of science. The archives hold administrative and program records, as well as records of Science. For more information, read About the Archives, or browse the Collections.
The information on this site is contained in a relational database using MySQL and PHP. With a grant from NSF (SES 0217498), we are migrating the database into XML to better comply with emerging standards in digital archiving. Technical discussion of our process, along with open source code and templates, will be included in the Digital Tools.
