Amersham Pharmacia
Biotech, developed new enzymes with co-funding from NIST's Advanced
Technology Program (ATP) that offer productivity gains and other benefits
in biomedical research and diagnostics. This work combined new knowledge
of naturally occurring enzymes with molecular engineering techniques.
Amersham has commercialized two products based on the research
co-funded by ATP and has a third in development. One engineered enzyme,
ThermoSequenase, is among the company's most successful products. It has
generated cumulative sales of over $15 million and is used in the Human
Genome Project. A second product, AlkPhos Direct, a non-radioactive detection
method, has numerous medical and agricultural applications and is safer
than traditional detection methods which depend on radioactivity.
