NOTICE OF LIMITED COMPETITION REQUEST FOR COMPETING APPLICATIONS: SPECIALIZED NEUROSCIENCE RESEARCH PROGRAMS RELEASE DATE: September 15, 2003 NOTICE: NOT-NS-03-022 National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) (http://www.ninds.nih.gov/) National Center on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NCMHD) (http://ncmhd.nih.gov/) National Center for Research Resources (NCRR) (http://www.ncrr.nih.gov/) National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) (http://www.nimh.nih.gov/) APPLICATION RECEIPT DATE: November 1, 2003 The NINDS is requesting competing renewal applications from Specialized Neuroscience Research Programs (SNRPs) awarded in response to a Request for Applications (RFA) NS-99-001, (http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/rfa-files/RFA-NS-99-001.html). This re-competition will continue the unique ongoing research, resource development and education programs of these SNRPs for a one-time renewal cycle. The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), in collaboration with the National Center on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NCMHD), the National Center for Research Resources (NCRR), and the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), proposes to continue efforts to augment and strengthen the research capabilities of faculty, students, and fellows at minority institutions by supporting the development of new, or enhancement of ongoing, basic and clinical neuroscience research projects. The SNRPs will emphasize four programmatic activities during the renewal period. (1) To assist in infrastructure development leading to well established, state-of-the- art neuroscience research programs; (2) To foster innovative and effective partnerships and collaboration between minority institutions and established neuroscience laboratories at federal and non-federal research institutions; (3) To develop, support and maintain a stimulating academic and intellectual milieu to inspire and prepare students and fellows to pursue research careers in neuroscience; and (4) To provide support to develop and sustain competitively funded neuroscience research projects and programs. Support is contingent on availability of funds and eligibility is restricted to SNRPs previously awarded under RFA-NS-99-001. Mechanism of support: The administrative funding mechanism for this program is a Specialized Center Cooperative Agreement (U54). Receipt date: Applications must be submitted by November 1, 2003. Review: Applications will be evaluated for scientific and technical merit by appropriate review groups convened by the NINDS in accordance with established review criteria described as outlined in a Letter of Agreement with the applicant organizations.
