Contaminated Media

This page contains links to information regarding addressing contaminated environmental media sediments, ground water, soils, and air at Superfund sites.

Contaminated Sediments - This area contains information regarding contaminated sediments as a significant environmental problem that impairs the uses of many water bodies and is often a contributing factor to the over 3,200 fish consumption advisories that have been issued nationwide. The Superfund program uses its Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA) authority, in collaboration with other EPA programs and authorities, to cleanup those sediment sites that present an unacceptable risk to human health and/or the environment.

Ground Water - EPA has published key ground water guidance documents and other selected reports on ground water which are used frequently in the Superfund program.

Soil Screening Guidance - The Soil Screening Guidance is a tool developed by EPA to help standardize and accelerate the evaluation and cleanup of contaminated soils at sites on the National Priorities List (NPL) where future residential land use is anticipated.

Vapor Intrusion into Indoor Air - Vapor intrusion is the migration of volatile chemicals from the subsurface into overlying buildings. Volatile chemicals in buried wastes and/or contaminated groundwater can emit vapors that may migrate through subsurface solid and into air spaces of overlying buildings. This Web site contains draft EPA guidance that provides current technical and policy recommendations on determining if the vapor intrusion pathway poses an unacceptable risk to human health at cleanup sites.

Abandoned Mine Lands - Abandoned Mine Lands (AMLs) present serious threats to human health and the environment. This Web site identifies EPA's resources related to the range of environmental risks and challenges from AMLs as well as risk management approaches.
