Superfund Site Information Now Available in a New, Easy-to-Read Format
On February 17, 2005, EPA added a new feature to its Superfund information database. Users of the database who run a search for Superfund Site information are now shown the results of their query in a Site Progress Profile. The profiles are a major improvement over the old reports, as they are more comprehensive and easier to read. These profiles were developed to help EPA more clearly communicate to the public about the complex and technical details associated with Superfund site activities.
The Superfund Site Progress Profiles present site information in easy to understand, non-technical language. A completed profile includes a graphic portrayal of cleanup progress and milestones. In addition, a user may now view the available information about land reuse status, institutional controls, Five-Year Review findings, and Government Performance and Results Act (GPRA) accomplishments. The profile also contains links to additional site-specific documents and records, such as Records of Decision (RODs), Five-Year Reviews, and more in-depth regional fact sheets. The launch was the culmination of a year and a half of intensive design, data update, and testing.
The new profiles address a recommendation from the Superfund Subcommittee of the National Advisory Council for Environmental Policy and Technology (NACEPT)*. In their report, NACEPT suggested that EPA "...ensure clear, transparent dissemination of a core set of data for all NPL sites and Superfund Program activities." The Superfund Site Information is available at www.epa.gov/superfund/sites/cursites. Users of the database can search the database based on a number of criteria, including site name, state, ZIP code, contaminants, and remedial activities. The database also includes information about sites proposed to the National Priorities List (NPL), sites currently listed as final on the NPL, and sites deleted from the NPL.
*NACEPT is an independent federal advisory committee that provides recommendations to the administrator of EPA on a broad range of environmental issues.
