Health Effects

Hazards: Danger! Poison! Vapor Harmful. May affect the brain or nervous system causing dizziness, headaches or nausea. Reduces the blood's oxygen-carrying capacity. Causes eye, skin, nose and throat irritation. May be harmful if absorbed through the skin. Cannot be made non-poisonous. Warning: Use of this product will expose you to methylene chloride and benzene which are known to cause cancer and to toluol which is known to cause birth defects and other reproductive harm. Notice: Reports have associated repeated and prolonged occupational over exposure to solvents with permanent brain and nervous system damage. Intentional misuse by deliberately concentrating and inhaling the contents may be harmful or fatal. Precautions: Contact with flame or hot surface may produce toxic gases. Keep away from heat and flame. Vapor may cause flash fire. Do not smoke. Use only with adequate ventilation. Do not breathe vapor or spray mist. Use this product outdoor, if possible. If you must use indoors, open all windows and doors or use other means to ensure fresh air entry. If properly used, a respirator may offer additional protection. Obtain professional advice before using. A dust mask does not provide protection against vapors. Do not use in basement or other unventilated area. Clean up rags, paper and waste promptly. Allow solvent to evaporate, then dispose in metal container. Wash thoroughly after handling. First Aid: In case of eye contact, flush thoroughly with water for at least 15 minutes and get medical assistance immediately. For skin contact, wash thoroughly with soap and water. Remove contaminated clothing and shoes. Get medical attention immediately. Wash clothing before reuse. Thoroughly clean contaminated shoes. If you experience difficulty breathing, leave area to obtain fresh air. If continued difficulty is experienced, get medical attention immediately. If swallowed, drink 1 or 2 glasses of water or milk call a physician, hospital emergency room or poison control center for a way to induce vomiting. Spill: if spilled, contain spilled material and remove with inert absorbent. Dispose of contaminated absorbent, container and unused contents in accordance with local, state and federal regulations. Effects of Overexposure: Excessive inhalation or ingestion may produce symptoms of central nervous system depression ranging from light headedness to unconsciousness and death. Can cause headache, mental confusion, depression, fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, cough, loss of sense of balance and visual disturbances. Exposure of the eyes and skin may product irritation.
Medical Limitations: Persons with angina or other cardiovascular diseases should not be exposed to this product.

Prolonged or repeated skin contact may cause dermatitis. Exposure to animals of greater than 5000 ppm has caused cardiac arrhythmias; however, there have been no reports in humans of effects on the heart. May cause cancer.
The State of California's Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986 (Prop 65) develops a list of chemicals that require specific warnings relating to cancer and/or reproductive toxicity. This product contains the following chemicals subject to the reporting requirements of that Act: Methylene chloride; Toluene; Carbon tetrachloride; Chloroform; Benzene.

A 1986 NTP, 2-year animal inhalation study report states that there is "clear evidence of carcinogenicity" in mice (lung and liver tumors) and female rats (mammary tumors). Experience in industry has shown no increased incidences of cancer of any type in the worker population. IARC lists this product as having inadequate evidence in humans and sufficient evidence in animals to evaluate carcinogenicity (Group 2B).

Handling/Disposal

From MSDS
Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place away from incompatible materials. Keep containers tightly closed when not in use. Do not use pressure to empty containers. Wash thoroughly after handling. Do not get in eyes, on skin or on clothing.
Containers, even those that have been emptied, will retain product residue and vapors. Always obey hazard warnings and handle empty containers as if they were full. Vapors of this product are heavier than air and will collect in low places, such as pits or degreasers or other poorly ventilated areas. Do not enter places where vapors are suspected unless special respirator protection is worn and an observer is present.
