There are no bicycle trails in this section. The stretch between the Mississippi and Vermillion rivers is undeveloped and remains a rural area. But if you are canoeing, it is one of the best examples of flood plain forest in the entire region. This section also contains the lower edge of another National Park Service unit, the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway. The Friends of the Vermillion River Water Trail are hard at work seeking designation of parts of the Vermillion River as a state water trail and to improve canoe and kayak access to this area.

At Lake Itasca, the river is so shallow, children can walk across the Mississippi. Between Governor Nicholls Wharf and Algiers Point in New Orleans, the Mississippi is more than 200 feet deep.
