Brugmansia is a genus of five species of shrubs and small trees -- all native to South America -- that turn heads with their enormous, often fragrant, trumpet-shaped flowers. The blooms, which hang from the branches like fluted bells, open in waves all summer and perfume warm evening with their sweet scent. In a large container, these imposing plants lend grace and distinction that never fails to inspire. Given full sun or partial shade and plenty of water, they grow quickly to 36-48in the first year but may not bloom where summers are short. They are easily overwintered indoors for a splendid show the following summer (see details in our cultural booklet or click on "Growing Guide" at left). Yes, these beauties may require some time to show what they can do, but the stunning result is more than worth the wait. Perennial in Zones 8-10.
