'Guinevere' is the blackest of all the wine-purple forms of Butterfly Bush, with heavily fragrant cobs of flowers; rich, dark green leaves; and a compact form. Cut flower spikes for bouquets or deadhead spent ones to encourage continued bloom until autumn.
The most popular of the 70 species of trees and shrubs in the genus Buddleia are varieties of B. davidii and its hybrids, with long stems ending in panicles of flowers that are ambrosia to butterflies. In cold-winter climates such as ours in Northwest Connecticut, plants are often killed almost to the ground. We prune back to live wood in spring and always have a spectacular show starting in midsummer. In warmer climates where top growth survives the winter, many gardeners find a severe annual pruning in early spring keeps plants shorter and more floriferous. Best in full sun and moist but well-drained soil. Plants suffer in the Southwest.
