60-Day Quarantine

Importing a Horse into the United States

GUIDE SHEET FOR HORSES FROM COUNTRIES AFFECTED WITH AFRICAN HORSESICKNESS (AHS)

Equine from countries affected with AHS may be imported into the United States provided they are accompanied by a proper health certificate issued by a full-time salaried veterinary office of the National Government stating that the equine have:

1. Been in that country for 60 days immediately preceding importation. If not, they are to be accompanied by a like certificate issued by a full-time salaried veterinary officer of the National Government of each country in which the equine have been during the 60 days preceding shipment to the United States.

2. Been inspected and found free of contagious diseases and, insofar as can be determined, exposure thereto during the 60 days immediately preceding exportation.

3. Not been vaccinated with a live or attenuated or inactivated vaccine during the 14 days immediately preceding exportation.

4. Not been on premises where AHS, dourine, glanders, surra, epizootic lymphangitis, ulcerative lymphangitis, equine piroplasmosis, equine infectious anemia, contagious equine metritis (CEM), or Venezuelan equine encephalomyelitis has occurred during the 60 days immediately preceding exportation nor have these diseases occurred on any adjoining premises during this same period of time.

5. Not been in a country where CEM is known to exist, nor have had any contact, breeding or otherwise, with horses from such a country for the 12 months preceding exportation.

6. Been inspected and found to be free of ectoparasites.

Equine imported into the United States directly from any country affected with AHS are required to be quarantined only at the port of New York for a minimum of 60 days. Please contact the import center for current quarantine charges.

Tests for dourine, glanders, equine piroplasmosis, and EIA are conducted during the required quarantine period. The official tests are complement fixation for dourine and glanders, cELISA for piroplasmosis, and AGID for EIA. For specific information about import requirements, please contact the Area Veterinarian in Charge, the USDA Animal Import Center, the Regional Office, or the National Center for Import and Export. Animals which test positive for any of these diseases will be refused entry.

It may be well to check with the State of destination as to any additional State health requirements that must be met. Many States have health requirements in addition to those required by the Federal Government.
