Category Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons
Description Black, odorless solid; [NIOSH]
Sources/Uses Used mainly to reinforce tire rubber and other elastomers; Also used in inks, plastics, and paints; [ACGIH] Carbon black is a manufactured material while soot is a waste product of combustion. Compared to soot, carbon black particles are more homogeneous and less biologically active. [AIHAJ 2001;62(2):218-28]
Comments The ACGIH TLV refers to commercially produced carbon black. "Soots derived from combustion sources containing absorbed poylcyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are excluded from the recommended TLV for carbon black." [ACGIH]
