Training courses can be developed to fit training needs of a specific group. Writing courses vary but include:

Plain Language in Government Writing (taught by Anne Plummer)

Learn how to use the easy-to-read design features included in the Plain Language Guidelines “Plain Language in Government Writing.” This includes clear and concise sentences and paragraphs, headings and bullets, active voice, you and other pronouns. Learn how to write clear and concise memos, letters, and reports that communicate effectively to a particular audience. Learn and practice a quick response method of writing that will help you meet deadlines.

Scientific and Technical Writing (taught by Sondra Watson, ACG)

Improve your writing through the application of critical reasoning skills in the development of logical structure and flow for documents such as reports, proposals, and publications. Plain language writing strategies are also taught.

Scientific and Medical Editing

Develop skills needed to prepare, critique, and edit scientific or medical manuscripts, letters to the editor, articles, and reviews for publication.

Writing Workshop

Learn strategies for writing clearly and concisely.

Plain Language

Learn to approach writing visually and structurally, construct a clear message; fine-tune your writing; and identify ways to engage and sustain the reader’s attention. The course is ideal for employees who want to improve their writing styles regardless of the type of writing they do.

Clear Writing Through Critical Thinking

Learn reasoning skills to help organize information, anticipate questions, and draw sound conclusions. It also helps to build problem-solving techniques into a critical pattern of thinking. You will develop the skills to make sure memos and instructions are correctly interpreted and followed and convey information effectively each time you write.

Effective Writing

Learn how to organize and edit your own writing to make your message concise, clear, and persuasive. This course provides help in writing and revising business letters, reports, and other documents to generate attention, interest, and results.

Technical Writing

Improve your ability to organize, write, and revise technical documents and reports so that your product will be clearer and easier to follow.

Fundamentals of Writing

This course takes beginning writers from concept to finished document. Topics include fundamental writing concepts, organization of ideas, sentence construction and flow, and basic principles of grammar.
