September 20, 2005

Making a Difference for Generations

The Laboratory's 2006 United Way giving campaign, "Making a Difference for Generations,” begins Monday, Sept. 26.

The campaign kicks off with a book fair at Fuller Lodge from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Monday. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the United Way.

Peace Meal will provide musical entertainment and a lunch from Las Salsas will be available for $5. A burrito bar, featuring vegetarian or meat will be served with rice, beans and a soda. Four members of Peace Meal are Lab employees: Marc Clay of the Office of Technical Support (DX-TSO), Bob Garnett of DARHT (DX-6), Steve Booth of Stockpile Complex Modeling and Analysis (D-2) and Jay Justice of KSL Services.

Individuals who attend the kickoff at Fuller Lodge also can visit United Way affiliated member agency information tables to learn more about services these agencies provide.

The book fair continues from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday through Thursday in the Otowi Building at Technical Area 3.

A variety of books are available for purchase at the book fair, including children’s books, general interest educational and reference books, cookbooks, inspirational titles and books on sports. There also will be photo albums, stationery, music, toys, executive gifts and regional titles, said Debbi Wersonick of the Community Relations (CRO) Office.

Dave Beck, acting associate director for weapons engineering and manufacturing (ADWEM), chair of this year’s giving campaign said, "I know there are many options within the community to make a donation or contribution. What makes United Way one of my giving choices is knowing what a collective fundraising activity can do for our local agencies.

“With the size of [the] Laboratory, our combined impact is enormous. Your participation in United Way is an individual decision. There are a variety of options to participate in the Santa Fe or Northern New Mexico campaigns. Please take the time to consider giving to United Way.”

Pledge materials are scheduled to be delivered to Lab employee mail stops by Sept. 26. Employees who don't receive pledge cards by Oct. 7 should contact CRO at 5-4400. The Lab’s United Way campaign continues through Nov. 18.

Employees can designate specific United Way agencies they want to support with their donation.

Beginning Monday (Sept. 26), Laboratory workers also can pledge to the United Way campaign online. University of California employees with CRYPTOCards can make donations by going to http://unitedway.lanl.gov online.

In addition to online pledging, Lab workers can pledge to United Way through payroll deduction. Or they can write a check to United Way, attach the check to the pledge card and return it to Mail Stop P232 through interoffice mail.

Lab workers also can participate in the United Way of Northern New Mexico Leadership Giving Circle, which is open to employees who donate at least $1,000 in the current campaign, or the United Way of Santa Fe County Innovators Circle, which is open to employees who donate $1,000 or more.

For information on individual agencies in Los Alamos and Northern New Mexico to which Lab workers can contribute, go to www.losalamos.com/unitedway/ online. For information about the Innovation Fund of Santa Fe County, go to www.uwsfc.org online.

United Way of Santa Fe County’s Community Innovation Fund supports large-scale initiatives designed to create lasting change.

Lab divisions and groups are encouraged to organize their own events to support the fundraising effort.
