LRPs are a two-way commitment
|
LRPs involve a "service obligation." In return for NIH payments
on your student loans, you make a binding legal commitment
to complete two years of qualified research.
Participants who discontinue qualifying research during
their two-year contract without prior consent of NIH are
considered in
breach of contact. They face substantial financial
penalties in addition to a requirement to refund all LRP
payments made on their behalf.
For example, a participant who unilaterally terminates
research during the contract is liable for a penalty of
$7,500 for each month of unserved service, plus all amounts
paid on their behalf, including interest. The amount the
U.S. is entitled to recover shall not be less than $31,000.
The
service obligation is not ordinarily a concern for those
seriously pursuing a research career. However, it’s a
factor to consider if you’re uncertain about your
near-term career plans.
