Steel Industry Reaches New Milestone In Energy Efficiency
01/14/2009- WASHINGTON, D.C. – The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) reported today that the United States steel industry has achieved a new milestone in energy efficiency by reducing its energy intensity per ton of steel shipped by approximately 33 percent since 1990. This represents a further improvement since AISI announced a 29 percent reduction in 2006.
AK Steel’s James L. Wainscott Elected New AISI Chairman
01/09/2009- Washington, D.C. – The Board of Directors of the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) has elected James L. Wainscott, chairman, president and CEO of AK Steel Corporation, to serve as chairman of the Institute until May of 2010.
Steel Imports End Year Down 5 Percent
01/07/2009- Washington, D.C. - Based on the Commerce Department’s most recent Steel Import Monitoring and Analysis (SIMA) data, the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) reported today that steel import permit applications for the month of December totaled 2,009,000 net tons (NT).
Report On 2001-2007 U.S. Indirect Steel Trade Now Available
01/06/2009- WASHINGTON, D.C. – The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) has updated its analysis of U.S. “indirect” steel trade to include 2007 (see attached summary sheets). This expands the earlier analysis for years 1999-2006.
November Imports Decline vs. October
12/23/2008- Washington, D.C. – Based on preliminary Census Bureau data, the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) reported today that the U.S. imported a total of 2,241,000 net tons (NT) of steel in November 2008, including 2,058 ,000 NT of finished steel (down 28 percent and 17 percent, respectively, vs. October final data).
AISI and AIST Scholarship Application Announcement
12/04/2008- Washington, D.C. – The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) and the Association for Iron & Steel Technology Foundation (AIST Foundation) have announced that applications for the FeMET and StEEL Scholarships are being accepted now through March 5, 2009.

October Imports Up 1 Percent vs. September
11/25/2008- Washington, D.C. – Based on preliminary Census Bureau data, the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) reported today that the U.S. imported a total of 2,964 ,000 net tons (NT) of steel in October 2008, including 2,344,000 NT of finished steel (up 1 percent and down 5 percent, respectively, vs. September final data).
