Abstract:

The National Student Loan Data System (NSLDS) is a national database of information regarding loans and other financial aid awarded to postsecondary students under Title IV of the Higher Education Act. It provides a national source of current student-level, grant-level, and loan-level information that the Department and other Federal agencies can use both for research and to improve Title IV delivery through automation and standardization.

Purpose:

NSLDS provides a national source of current student-level, grant-level, and loan-level information that the Department and other Federal agencies can use both for research and to improve Title IV delivery.

Agency Program:

NSLDS is authorized by Title IV of the Higher Education Act.

Sources of Data:

Data come from the Central Processing System, the Direct Loan Systems, the Federal Family Education Loan System, the Pell System, and the Postsecondary Education Participants System of the Department; and from schools and student loan Guaranty Agencies.

Access Constraints:

Direct access to the system is limited to authorized ED staff, postsecondary schools, student loan Guaranty Agencies, lenders, and State Agencies. Provisions of the Privacy Act apply to the data in this system.
