Vectorized Image Segmentation Via Trixel Agglomeration (VISTA)

Abstract
VISTA (U.S. Patent No. 7127104) is a broad-based next generation image representation technology that is aimed at facilitating automated image understanding, object-based compression, and scalable graphical rendering. VISTA involves the transfiguration of conventional low-level, pixel-based, raster images into high-level, feature-based, polygonal tilings of images that conform to structures and forms inherent in the images. The result is a visually faithful vectorized representation of images that is amenable to object detection and recognition based on shape and color attributes, image compression adapted to structural features in images, and scalable graphical rendering of images through vectorized representation of polygons constituting the images. The novelty and uniqueness of VISTA is due to the efficient geometric modeling of perceptual principles of processing visual information known from cognitive psychology and vision science to achieve visually meaningful polygonal image decompositions. The invention offers the following advantages:

  1. Applicable to any imagery.
  2. Works well with low contrast, high texture, and noisy images.
  3. High computational efficiency providing for real-time (eg., video) and large-scale (eg., satellite imagery) applications.
  4. Allows flexible redesign and adaptation of algorithms for specialized image classes (such as IR, X-ray, etc) and specific tasks (eg., object recognition, realistic rendering, etc.).
  5. A well supported base of other intellectual property available for licensing.

"RaveGrid," a non-commercial evaluation version of the software showcasing the image vectorization capability of VISTA , is available at: RaveGrid Download Website
