Mechanical Locking and Spray Shadowing for Stress Relief in Thick Plasma Sprayed Coatings

Abstract
A method for preparing the surface of an object to which a sprayed coating is applied that offers the following advantages:  1)  permits thick coatings (> 10 mm) to be applied without peeling, spalling, or cracking, 2) provides greater thermal shock resistance for the coatings, and 3) is applicable to almost all sprayed coating techniques including thermal and plasma spray for both metallic and ceramic materials.

Application(s)

  • Wear resistant thermal/plasma sprayed coatings (ITER is a special subset)
  • Corrosion (anodic protection) resistant coatings

Advantages
Cost of application, downtime/lifetime savings, infrastructure modification
