for teachers

click! photography changes everything explores photography's impact on our history, culture, and lives. One of the most important goals of click! is to use the extraordinary photographic collections at the Smithsonian to encourage teachers and their students to investigate:
  • Why photographs are made
  • How and why photographs command our attention
  • How photographs are encoded with values
  • How the meaning of photographs changes depending on the knowledge and perspectives we bring to them
To help students acquire the skills needed to be critical viewers and users of visual imagery, the Smithsonian Photography Initiative has created the following classroom activities geared towards grades 6-12 and aligned with National Standards:
Lesson Plan I (download PDF) Designed for Grades 6-8, this lesson, based on the theme Photography Changes Who We Are, examines the role photographs play in representing ourselves and our communities.
Lesson Plan II (download PDF) Designed for Grades 9-12, this lesson, based on the theme Photography Changes What We Want, asks students to explore the concept of celebrity and the role photography plays.
