High Performance, Nanosized Grain AlON for Optical Applications
Abstract
This invention produces a high performance transparent polycrystalline aluminum oxynitride (AlON). The demand for a high-hardness, high-strength transparent material is steadily growing for optical, defense, and energy applications. This is a high-quality, low-cost substitute for sapphire and aluminum oxide materials.
Application(s)
• Armor windows
• Sodium and halogen lamps
• Optical lenses
• Optical limiting devices
• Scanner windows
Advantages
• Low-cost
• Reduced composition agglomeration
• Shorter sintering times
• Higher strength, hardness
