Cubic Metal Oxide Film Buffers for IBAD MgO Templates Amenable for High Rate Reactive Sputter Deposition

Abstract
This invention describes heteroepitaxially deposited cubic metal oxide buffer materials amenable to high rate reactive sputter deposition and which are useful as buffer films on ion beam assisted deposition (IBAD) magnesium oxide (MgO) biaxially textured templates.  The superconducting layer, typically YBCO, is subsequently deposited on this layer.

Application(s)
High temperature superconducting tapes made by the ion beam assisted deposition (IBAD) process.  So-called second generation superconductors.

Advantages
The advantage of this invention is a much higher buffer layer deposition rate in the IBAD/YBCO superconductor manufacturing process, which will lower costs significantly.  It is possible that an entire layer can be eliminated.
