Novel Electrochromic Copolymer with Well Defined Molecular Structure and Oxidation States

Abstract
Polyaniline (PANI) is one of the most promising organic conducting polymers for commercial applications due to its low cost, fast switching in redox states, and environmental stability. However, new developments in electrochromic polyamides (alternating copolymers) bearing oligoaniline segments show marked improvements over existing polyaniline technology. In addition to four distinct oxidation states, these copolymers are electrochemically stable and have excellent electrochromic properties. In contrast to polyanilines, new polyamide structures show excellent adhesion to indium tin oxide (ITO) glass and show no signs delamination after extensive redox cycle testing.

Application(s)
• Rechargeable batteries
• Electrochromic displays
• Chemical actuators
• Electromechanical actuators
• Anti-corrosion coatings
• Interference shielding
• High contrast displays

Advantages
• Excellent switching speeds
• Reliable adhesion to glass
• High-contrast behavior
• Four distinct oxidation states
• Electrochemically stable
• Color flexibilty
