COMBUSTION SYNTHESIS OF NANO-STRUCTURED METAL FOAMS
Abstract
LANL scientists have developed a new method to produce transition metal foams. The process has been shown to produce monolithic nanoporous metal foams that have densities as low as 0.01g per square centimeter and surface areas ranging up to 250 square meters per gram. The monolithic foams have an open cell structure. The production method is simple, low-cost, and scalable to production quantities.
Application(s)
- Catalysis
- Radiation absorption
- Heat exchange
- Electrodes
- Sensor elements
Advantages
- Flexible production method for a wide variety of nanoporous metal monoliths
- Lower densities compared with existing metal foams
- Higher surface areas compared with existing metal foams
- No template material removal
- Enables control over pore size
