2006 FDA Science Forum
A Century of FDA Science: Pioneering the Future of Public Health

FDA is the first scientific agency in the world to have been given regulatory responsibilities
and transformed into a full-fledged regulatory agency. At the agency's Centennnial and at the Science Forum,
it is important to revisit that investment in regulatory science and communicate not only the tangible results
of that investment, but highlight the process by which that original commitment to high quality scientific
achievement will translate into the future of science at FDA.
Each year since 1993, the FDA Science Forum has served as a comprehensive
training program, and as a vehicle to communicate and promote issues relating
to scientific development and associated regulatory concerns. This annual event
showcases FDA's scientific achievements, facilitates discussions on topics
of interest to FDA and its stakeholders, promotes both internal and external
collaborations, and recognizes outstanding research and science-based review
performance with Scientific Achievement Awards.
This is the only forum where scientists from all disciplines and organizational
components of FDA meet to share data, knowledge, and ideas on the science-based
mission of the Agency. The Science Forum also features presentations by leaders
of the academic and public health communities, and thereby provides an excellent
environment for the open discussion of emerging science, technology, and
methodologies, as well as how they can be used to meet the Nation's public health
needs.
Open to the public, the 2006 Forum is designed to bring FDA scientists together
with representatives from other components of DHHS, industry, academia,
government agencies, consumer and patient advocacy groups, Congress,
international constituents, and many other stakeholders. This meeting
offers a valuable opportunity for academia and industry to learn about
FDA research, collaboration opportunities, and regulatory priorities.

- FDA Chapter of Sigma Xi
Founded in 1886, Sigma Xi
is the international honor society of
research scientists and engineers, with a distinguished history of
service to science and society. This non-profit society includes
nearly 65,000 scientists and engineers, in more than 100 countries,
who were elected to membership because of their research achievements
or potential. Nearly 200 members have received the Nobel Prize.
Sigma Xi chapters, more than 500 in all, can be found at colleges and
universities, government laboratories and industry research centers
throughout North America and around the world. In addition to publishing
award-winning American Scientist magazine, Sigma Xi awards hundreds of
grants annually to promising student researchers and sponsors a variety of
programs that support research ethics, science and engineering education,
the public understanding of science, international research networking and
the over health of the research enterprise.
The membership of the FDA Chapter of Sigma Xi includes research and review scientists.
The chapter has been instrumental in establishing the FDA Science Forum
as an ongoing focus of scientific exchange among FDA scientists. The
Chapter provides support for the Science Forum, presents certificates for
outstanding posters, and maintains web-based information for current and
past Forums from 1996 to the present.
