Ohio State's teacher prep unit receives official NCATE approval

The Ohio State University's Educator Preparation Unit has proven its commitment to producing quality teachers for our nation's children by achieving continued accreditation under the performance-oriented standards of the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). NCATE's Unit Accreditation Board made the official decision at its October 2008 meeting.

The measure applies to both the initial teacher preparation and advanced preparation levels. The action removes the condition from Standard 2 and returns Ohio State to its regular accreditation cycle.

The training of individuals to work in the nation's P-12 schools has been a long-standing tradition at Ohio State. The institution prepares approximately 700 candidates for licensure in Ohio each year. These preparation programs are housed across five colleges:

The action by NCATE's Unit Accreditation Board pertains to Ohio State's main campus as well as the Lima, Mansfield, Marion, and Newark campuses. The decision indicates that the unit and its programs meet rigorous standards set forth by the professional education community.

Curricula are in place at Ohio State for those seeking their first teaching license, for those wishing to enhance their teaching skills and adding additional licensure areas, and for those desiring to serve P-12 students through other professional school roles such as administrators, audiologists, school counselors, school nurses, school psychologists, school social workers, and speech language pathologists.

Appreciation and the next NCATE visit

NCATE expressed appreciation for the cooperation received from the faculty, staff, and administration of our institution during the site visit last April.

Appreciation is also extended to Bob Hite of the College of Education and Human Ecology for leading this effort. His team members are: Jogy Das, Pam Greene, Tony Durr, Paige Bruening, and Nicole Williams. They couldn't have organized this successful review without the help of faculty, mentor teachers, candidates, university supervisors, and staff.

The next NCATE visit is scheduled for fall 2012, which is seven years after the fall 2005 full visit.
